Stewardship practices assures safe storage, packaging, transport and distribution of crop protection products, as well as provides guidelines and standards for the storage and handling of crop protection products. UPL also trains warehouse employees in safety techniques and practices and ensures that these standards are constantly met through effective management control mechanisms. Appropriate equipment, handling, environmental consideration, and local laws are part of efforts to encourage high standards and eliminate any instances of malpractice.

Safe use of our products is not only significant in terms of its potential impact on human health and the environment but also for longterm sustainability of our products and to promote business growth.. We focus on Responsible and Safe use of pesticides by growers and all our customers. In order to ensure label compliance and promote human health and environment protection, at UPL, we conduct regular trainings and awareness campaigns on all aspects of stewardship, including purchase of right products, their storage, transport, use on crops and even managing empty containers.

Through Train-the-Trainers programs at UPL, we have developed Stewardship champions as focal point for various outreach activities. These Stewardship Champions further propagate the good agricultural practices and messages in field and collaborating with other stakeholders that have role to play.

Stewardship practices at UPL promotes IPM, which is the combination of cultural, biological and chemical measures. IPM provides the most cost effective, environmentally sound and socially acceptable method of managing diseases, insects, weeds and other pests in agriculture.

At UPL, we are implementing processes to ensure that the Empty Pesticide Containers (EPC) in which products are supplied are cleaned to remove any toxic residues by using triple-rinse process and disposed of safely in accordance with country regulations . We are collaborating with Industry partners across the globe to implement several major programs for ECM and their recycling to generate value and address environmental issues.

Stewardship also takes into consideration, the management and prevention of obsolete stock, that may lead to threat environment and community. UPL's stewardship activities place guidelines on how obsolete stocks can be disposed of efficiently and safely by bringing together all skilled resources. Importance of better warehousing, training in the management of crop protection product stocks are being practiced.

In Colombia, the post-consumer container collection program is a social and environmental initiative of 33 companies affiliated to the Campo Limpio corporation, for the management of empty pesticide containers; This initiative promotes the triple washing of containers and the adequate delivery to the collection and final disposal centers.

Stewardship As A Way Of Life At Upl Columbia

The UPL Columbia team has also actively participated in an industry-led program called ‘Campo Limpio’*. The program promotes the proper collection and disposal of pesticide containers. Careful emptying and rinsing of containers reduce concerns for human exposures and possible impact on wildlife and the environment. If paper or plastic containers are not properly emptied or rinsed, the container itself becomes a hazardous waste that can become potentially an expensive problem for farmers to tackle.
